Today’s winds have caused a few problems in clearing some of Iowa’s snow-covered roads.
Dennis Burkheimer, winter operations administrator with the Iowa Department of Transportation, said roads in western Iowa have been mostly cleared, but roads in the eastern half of the state are getting pounded with high winds and blowing snow.

“There’s not much we can do when Mother Nature decides to blow strong gusts of wind,” Burkheimer said. In areas with blowing snow, plows clear the roads multiple times.
Workers have been working nonstop since Saturday to clear roads, and will continue until roads are plowed, Burkheimer said.
The colder temperatures have also caused the wet snow to freeze.
“It’s just a typical Iowa weather event,” Burkheimer said.
Des Moines police reported having about 25 minor accidents from Saturday to this morning, most of them because of the winter weather conditions.
A tow ban was in effect for Interstate Highways 35, 80, and 235.
There were not any serious or fatal accidents reported this morning, according to State Patrol officials. Most of the accidents statewide were minor
One major accident reported Sunday was a nine-car pileup on I-35 near mile marker 52, which is near St. Charles.
A rollover accident in West Des Moines, near the intersection of Booneville Road and South Jordan Creek Parkway, sent a man to the hospital with minor injuries Sunday afternoon. His vehicle ended up in a small pond near the intersection.
Snow is back in the forecast late Tuesday into Wednesday.
